I didn't know him personally, but I do know that he contributed a lot to this forum. I don't recall that he was ever negative. I will miss his photos and the support he gave to nearly all of us, at one time or another. This forum will never be the same without him.

cth55 - Your pictures (Pakistan and Antigua) match Charlie's very closely I think, in the way he would capture the essence of every day life wherever he was. Well done.
Recently I saw Charlie Shugart's travel threads about his trip to USSR in early 90s.
These threads with such photos were strongly attracted my attention. I'm sure there is no need to say how rare photos form USSR and post soviet countries are on this forum. I wrote big comments in the hope to strike up a discussion with the author. Then I didnt know that Charlie Shugart has gone at the moment...
In this, in his memory, I would like to post a few photos from the country through which I discovered his photographs and himself.
P.S. Yeah, Mr. Shugart, a lot has changed in that time. You wount see the queue outside of shoe stores at this time any more. At the same time, the authorities still dont care about well-being of its citizens. Despite high amount of lux cars, there are still remains a place for people without smiles on their faces, poverty and art on that streets.
I always enjoyed seeing Charlie's images on here. He is the reason that I bought a film scanner because he had scanned so many of his old slide of foreign lands.
I must be doing something wrong as the image is not being posted to here.
I admire Charlie's images very much and had a few exchanges with him. He will be missed by me and many others I believe.
I am not familiar with the rules of this Forum or the technical barriers involved, but It would be a great tribute to Charlie and a fabulous gift to his admirers if Fred Miranda could combine all his posts (just the original post) into a single closed thread.
RIP Charlie.

Like many of other members here at FM, I always enjoyed viewing Charlie's posts. He was a true adventurer, and shared many of his worldly travels through the variety of images he presented.
Never had a direct conversation with him. I now regret that. He was a constant presence here at FM, and is sadly missed. A few months back, his absence became very noticeable. I searched online in hopes of learning about his status. Was not able to find any current information. However, I did manage to discover a few of his writings. Here is a quote from Charlie that I found on a photographer's blog by the name of Eric Kim. Thought I would share it.
“Looking back on my travels, I’ve realized that my best and most memorable adventures came when I was vulnerable. Oh, I don’t so much mean vulnerable to danger (although sleeping in houses under construction in Yugoslavia might have been a bit dangerous), but vulnerable in that I didn’t really have fixed plans. I usually wandered to wherever impulse guided me, as opposed to having fixed itineraries. And often those meanderings held surprises.
I’ve led tour groups to China (fixed itineraries). Wonderful trips, but nothing compared to my own travels, i.e. hopping on a local bus and crossing to the other side of Crete to a village I knew nothing about. Or hitch-hiking to some Greek ruins (with nobody stopping for hours), and being invited to lunch by three men working inside a beehive kiln where lunch consisted of sitting on the dirt, reaching with our fingers into a community bowl of scrambled eggs, tearing off chunks from a loaf of home-made bread, and washing it all down with local retsina wine poured into tin cups that looked like failed projects in a high school beginning metal shop class.
That’s the kind of vulnerability to which I’m referring. Those memories are forever.”

Another insightful writing of Charlie's was a lesson on the value of 'Cheap Travel'. If you have a few moments, it can be found at this link:

I never chatted with Charlie which is rather unfortunate given his love for travel and the wisdom he could have shared - you never know the age of folks on here! I had always wondered where he hadn't been as his photos were from all over the world! What an enjoyable and fulfilling life he did have. This is a wonderful idea and I'll share a few from my travels I'd think he'd like to commemorate him.
