Thank you all very much for your time in commenting the post. Unfortunately, no the kestrel did not survive the attack. Was too gruesome and sad to post more images after the last shot. Wanted to intervene initially but figured should let nature take its course. I was fortunate to be at the right place right time. Almost didn't want to go shooting on a cloudy rainy Sunday afternoon.
Phenomenal set Thang. Your images and story are chilling on an emotional level but technically excellent (as always). Incredible that you were able to witness and capture this interaction. Well done!

yes amazing...many of us have been speculating that the decline of the kestrel in North America was in part due to the increase in the number of Cooper's Hawks...
I have also seen photos of Red-tails holding kestrels as prey in their talons...
The world has changed for kestrels in the last 25 years.
that's interesting. I wasn't aware of that. I did notice we don't have as much Kestrels as it was about 3 years ago.

I just love it when a rare event in nature is caught by a great photographer and shared
I love those little Kestrels but the amazing power and determinations of the Coopers blows me away! They rule my neighborhood for sure.
Thang, awesome job man, love the ground level perspective you took, that rocks man

Brilliant series, albeit very bittersweet as I love kestrels. Quite amazing as I would have thought there would be much easier prey around for a Coopers...but there you have it...another great series of nature doing what is does best.
Congrats on what must be a very unique series of images.
Eric
Thanks Eric. I love Kestrels too as they are so colorful/cute and yet feisty at the same time.
