p.1 #1 · The Enchantment Lakes Wilderness - backpacking the Cascade mountains' alpine with an RX1R

I went backpacking into the Enchantments a few months ago and one of my biggest challenges was managing weight for the 4 day trip and huge climb up and down Aasgard pass. I ended up leaving the 5D3 behind and taking my RX1R and RX100/3 plus tripod and accessories. I was still at just under 40 lbs considering all food, shelter, clothing, and gear. The camera set made a nice duo, though I did wish I had some proper reach sometimes. All of these images were taken with the RX1R, some are vertical panoramas.

It was a nice bit of solitude for a few days, there was nobody else around for miles for several days.

Hi Chris,

#3 is my favorite here. It looks like a great trip. But I have 2 say, I would not have left the good camera behind. The weight difference between the 2 systems is not that much in reality. On similar backpacking trips I usually take 2 D800 bodies and 3 lenses, along with at least 1 tripod, and sometimes 2. It's all in the training and being prepared. And I am not saying you should bring 2 complete camera sets like I do, but for sure I would encourage you next time to bring your main camera. Locations like these can offer once in a lifetime opportunities for shots, and my thinking is always I want to make sure I am capturing it with the best quality I can.

Jim

What a wonderful series! Images four and five really speak to me - very nice! Weight is an issue going up the (rough, steep, and sometimes dangerous) route from Colchuck Lake to Aasgard pass. Even when I was in climbing shape, I thought very carefully about what I took up into the Enchantments. Thanks for sharing these!

Congratulations on completing that trip, the hiking looks intense and the pictures you brought back were amazing to say the least. Well done!

Thanks for the comment Jim! Reality is a tricky, or at least subjective thing now do you agree? =) I toiled over the system to bring, but I'm secretly in love with my RX1R, it's incredibly sharp when used right and has produced me some awesome prints up to 3 x 4 feet. It was tough to be stuck with a 35mm focal length, but after weighing everything the extra 5 lbs of the 5D3 system (head, lenses, etc.) would have pushed me 5lbs over my max weight. And I couldn't save weight elsewhere. Oh, and are you saying the RX1R is not a good camera! How dare you! =)

Thanks Keith - do you have a link to some of your Enchantments' photos? I traveled here after permit season ended, and just missed the prime larches by about a week or two. Still, there was something appealing in being the only one there, and in the more orange (rather than gold) color of the shedding larches.

Aasgard is no joke, I've done it with more weight in the past and will never cross 40lb again. I would like to be more at 30-35 but with the unpredictable weather I'm glad I brought good rain and snow gear.

Chris,
It was 20 years ago when I last went into the Enchantments, and I really wasn't doing much photography back then! So, I don't have any images of the Enchantments, unfortunately. Yours are just wonderful! Thanks again.

Keith, I think it's time you return don't you! The permit lottery starts in a couple of weeks.

Don't toil too much, I'd wager that it delivers better results than the 5D3 anyways. That 24 MP sensor, yumm!

I love the second to last image with the blurred clouds and hint of dappled light in the valley in the background. The color of the rocks ... bright ones against dark ones, all contrasting with the snow and the kiss of color on the larches are really nice to look at. Seems like an amazing trip.
