The timing for the Canadian market seems crazy stupid to me. One would think that with the popularity of the 200-500 and 300mm pf, there would be huge interest in the 500mm PF. Furthermore, Canada has a thriving community of nature photographers and many have the income to make a purchase like this... seem like a giant miscalculation by Nikon, especially if they are serious about regaining market share in the photo-industry. Lenses like these and cameras like the D500 are what enthusiasts are craving.
It's a numbers game to the big companies, and it has to be remembered that the entire population of Canada is less than the state of California.

Yet Australia and Switzerland with smaller populations than Canada have already received shipments.
Which store?? Usually CameraCanada has been best for popular items but they didn’t have preorder up as soon as TCS. Even then I hesitated for a day or more so I don’t have my hopes up. 😥😥🤞🤞

Yes, but like you, I may change my mind before then.
Geoff if it were merit based per photographer you and imagemaster would already have them in hand....thank god not or the common man such as myself would always be wanting. arbitrage wrote:

TheCameraStore told me they haven’t received their first shipment yet but that they only expect a single lens in the first shipment 😳😳. I don’t think I’m first in line....oh well...too busy with work to shoot anyways

They do look good. Do you have any of maybe a bird that was a decent crop? My back tells me that I need to switch from Canon and get this......but I need to see if the quality of what I have gotten with current equipment is good enough. And of course, I, too am interested in shots with the TC.
I very nearly pre-ordered this one, but managed to keep my eye on the prize, that being my long-term goal to acquire a 500/4E. Yes, the 500/5.6 PF is compact and light in weight, but the 500/4E is quite light in weight, for a 500/4 lens.
I will admit that seeing such beautiful real-world images has me wondering whether I made a best decision.
For reference, regarding the advantage of f/4, I have a most wonderful Nikkor 500/4P lens, but the only BIFs I would reasonably hope to capture, with manual-focus, might be soaring vultures, or the White Pelicans who visit us in the winter.

Very nice samples Lance, though the SS on the BIF is a tad low...I try 1/5000 to get the eye absolutely sharp.
That's interesting Gary.
I've been using a BIF SS of 1/2500 for several years and thought it was about as sharp as I could hope to get it with my 200-500 (f8). But, as I review some images (only in my mind now), the ones I have of the sharpest eyes seem to be of stationary birds.
I would like to see an example or two of a sharp eye shot at 1/5000.

It will be interesting to see what those who have both lenses, say about resolution.
You may be right and I may do the same. I pre-ordered. So, when it comes, I will have up to 30 days to decide. But I've not owned the 500E.
Arbitrage has/does and I believe he pre-ordered the 500 5.6. But he did say something about selling off some of his stuff to pay for the 500 PF.
I doubt very much that 1/5000 would result in the eye looking any sharper than using 1/2000. It is probably just the light reflections on the eye that may not result in it looking sharper. Looks good to me.
