The 70-300 goes out if weight is an issue. I will take the 100-400 if I am likely to need it and it is not a long walk. I call 10 miles a short walk..

I have twenty-five plus what I consider to be excellent images with my 100-400GMbut I do not have time to resize them for this forum. I save at 4,000 pixels which works fine on 500ps, format, youpic but Freds site is not really desiged as a portfolio but rather a forum.
It is one of my favorite lenses it never ceases to amaze me how good this lens is and versatile. I have many flower close ups, animals of course it is the only lens you need to take with you to the zoo with a 2x and many others.
I just hope they come out with a 200-600GM as good as this. Rumors are teh 200-600 is a G lens but that will still be pretty good if it renders we know it will be sharp.

Tried my hand with race photography on my first outing with the 100-400 last weekend. Didn't get in much landscape time after a full day of shooting people.

I voted that I own it and rarely use it. The truth is I own the Canon 100-400L and rarely use it (once a year?). No complaints, just too big to carry "in case" I see something while walking around. Occasionally I'll pack the smaller Nikon 180/2.8 AIS or 300/4.5 AIS, but almost never use them either. This is also why I haven't nibbled on any of the great new 135mm lenses -- I have some lenses in the telephoto range already that I barely ever use. But if the need arises, I have something that can capture a high quality picture on these high MP cameras we use.
Besides size and weight, the restrictions to DOF play against my interests and needs.
Most of my photos are between 15mm to 105mm, with about 80% between 24-70, and about 50% between 21-50.
That said, all the photos I've seen posted from the Sony 100-400 show it to be an outstanding lens, and if I shot sports, animals, or kids, I'd love to own this lens.

I just got a copy a few hours ago and wish I had it 2 weeks ago during a nice trip in the mountains - for landscape photography.
Anyway, after the usual test shots, here are the first two pics coming out of it. Not sure if these will "work", it is something different that what I do usually "style wise"... let's see

Had mine delivered yesterday. Haven't shot anything significant with it yet. I have my first job with it next Wednesday so I will post something then. So far, I am liking this lens a great deal.

Yes Jim, people make striking landscapes out of it, but field flattening and lack of depth may unnerve some. The temptation to go past trad landscape FLs might be hard to resist. A 'weight budget' of 1500g gets you a great 100mm plus well, not much contemporary at 180-200mm. Time for a longer CV?

Massive crops without tc.
Iso 16,000 for this one.
Big crop using a tc.
When I saw the eagle, it was looking straight down, but I couldn't tell what it was seeing.
So as I'm snapping off some shots of the bird, I see a fox running up the hill, and in an instant, it was gone.
