Just got the lens and just took a few quick shots out the back yard. I see what other people are saying about the corners but I shot for years with the Canon 17-40L (which had a reputation for bad corners) and this lens seems better so I think I'll be good

Nothing scientific.. just shot out the back.

Strong vignetting and soft corners are to be considered compromises ? In a $1300 lens ?? I don't think so. Here's my $200 10-20 AF-P on a $350 D3400. I'll keep my $2500, thank you very much.

Reading a bunch of random posts and drawing the conclusion that your D3400 with 10-20 can play in the same league as 14-30 f4 might be a little bit of wishful thinking.

I'm not drawing any conclusions about anything. My point is I would expect and be willing to accept some compromises on a $200 lens. I would not expect to accept those same compromises on a $1300 lens. I use this combination solely as an ultra-light backpacking option and for that purpose it doesn't disappoint in the least. And I don't subscribe to the notion that owning a certain lens places you in some higher "league". These forums prove on a daily basis that boring, mediocre images can be taken with all types of equipment from the cheapest to the most expensive.

Yup, a 10mm DX lens stopped down to f/10 is an apt comparison for a 14mm FF lens at f/4. I am not saying that the 10-20 AFP and 3400 are not a terrific option when shooting in bright daylight on a perfect day fully stopped down. But under those conditions the same can be said of almost any cellphone. And I will be the last to argue that there is a significant correlation between lens quality and image worthiness. I am off now to find some apples and oranges to blow $2500 on.

On a more productive note, the latest images posted here show a much more controlled vignetting. My 14-30Z arrived today and I took some quick snaps indoor and also don't see the significant vignetting with some of the images earlier in the thread. Have not tried without corrections though.

P.S. This fairly annoying "review" was posted on YouTube and it once again shows the gross vignetting of the 14-30 without the lens corrections. This is far worse than the $200 Rokinon. Kind of disappointing for the price point. I need to run some low light tests to see how much bring up the edges screws things up in noise limited images.

You have to be drawing conclusions otherwise you can't make judgements on anything. At 14mm to maybe 15mm there is a little softness in the corners, but *overall* the lens is super sharp and plays in the big league and certainly outshines your 10-20 lens which, by the way, equals 15-30 in FOV on a FF camera. Just because *some* of the images posted here may not be up to your "lofty standards" of what you consider acceptable doesn't preclude them from making better images than some lowly lens. Not only that, but many images posted are for demonstration and test purposes and not necessarily posted for their class leading photography.

Yes boring, mediocre images can be taken with any lens including the 10-20 DX lens. If in some odd way you're saying that you feel better about posting boring mediocre images because you have a cheap lens then you might consider the absurdity of that kind of thinking. If there was a 14-30 f4 lens with no compromises would that somehow mean that you could post images that weren't boring or mediocre? I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here. Your DX lens isn't as good as the 14-30 f4 lens and that doesn't change regardless of the skill of the photographer (or lack of).

Z7 + 14-30, various focal lengths and apertures. All corrected for distortion and vignetting as best I can in Capture One Pro which does not have the lens profile for the 14-30 f4S yet. I have corrected them because I feel that is the way Nikon intended the lens to be used ie once corrected in post process, whether by auto correcting software or manually. I think the 14mm FOV is *after* correct correction. It seems a relatively simple exercise and one I would do with *any* extreme wide angle lens of this caliber.

As I reported in another post, this lens is *very sharp*, great colour, great contrast and overall superb IQ and easily beats the 16-35 f4 VR and from what I remember about my 14-24 f2.8 it beats that also. It is right up there with the Tamron 15-30 f2.8 as far as the above criteria are concerned. Like the Tamron, the images really pop and have incredible detail across the frame. Yes, there is s tiny bit of softness in the very extreme corners at 14mm, but once you get to 15mm or so, that softness basically goes. As Tek9 pointed out in my post, the Tamron in reality is more like a 16mm anyway and thus the 14-30 is at least a match for that lens in useful FOV, yet is less than half the weight and size! This is my new untra wide angle zoom lens,. I have sold my 16-35 f4 VR and I will be selling my Tamron 15-30 f2.8 as well.

I think you'll really enjoy it if you realise it's limitations at 14mm in the very extreme corners. As I say, once corrections are applied it ceases to become a major issue and only a minor one, but at 15+mm, it is as good as it gets. So, if we think of it as a 15-30mm f4, than it is a superb lens, IMO.
