Just got my 35mm GM! I also got the 85mm 1.8 to pair with it. I am coming from 28mm F2 and 55mm 1.8 combo so it feels like a major upgrade. I love the 28mm focal length but 35mm might be the perfect in between lens. It is so versatile!

Thanks Fred! Any chance you got to test the relative t-stop against those two other 35s? if you took shots at the same timish and same metering you should be able to just compare shutter speeds assuming center frame exposure is the same.
Chris
Hi Chris,
I was able to test this today. It was taken during overcast lighting. (heavy cloudy day)
To compare light transmission for the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM, Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN and Voigtlander 35mm f/2 APO lenses, I shot all three lenses at f/2 using manual exposure. I've repeated the test 3 times and got the same results. (lenses were changed in about 5 seconds from each other)
The result is that the Sony is the winner while the Sigma performing very close. The Voigtlander's image is noticeably darker with about 1/3 less light at f/2 compared to the other two.
Here are the final images: First (Sony), second (Voigtlander), third (Sigma).
PS: It's a good comparison for distortion as well.

I just received my copy of the lens and I'm a little worried that the upper left may be soft at 1.4 while the other corners seem to be sharp. But I'm also not sure if it is just a focal plane thing with the way I'm testing. Any recommendations on best approach to test to confirm?

had a similar issue actually, mine is soft on the left side, sharp from left-center and across to the right side. really disappointed in QC. then again BH decides to ship this lens in a large box with zero padding. i'm not going to play the lottery again. get up high somewhere and focus to infinity across the entire frame to really see it.
The corners will be soft-ish at 1.4. but they should all be equally soft. the best way to test this is at infinity. if you’re testing it closer, like when using a focus chart, sometimes the sides/corners of the chart are all at different distances to the sensor plane and they won't all have equal resolution when wide open.

Thanks - I'll try to do that this weekend. I wonder if Best Buy is hassle-free for lens returns / exchanges if I do have an issue.

Here’s a link to the way Fred checks for decentering.

That's a bummer, I ran Fred's test on mine multiple times because I couldn't believe my eyes. I've never had a lens this sharp and uniform edge to edge / corner to corner.
this is my first badly misaligned gm lens but the only other one i’ve used is the 24-70. which was well centered. all my sony/zeiss japan lenses also never had an issue, but many have had issues with them, so i think its just luck of the draw. i ordered from bh while it was backordered and it magically shipped in a few days (while still on backorder) so i’m guessing it was a previous return.
