Last month I photographed spring in the Smoky Mountains and part of the Blue Ridge and that was my first trip with the 50-400mm. It worked so well that it never left the camera the whole time. Being able to zoom out to 50mm is more handy than I expected. I’ve posted a 9 image set all from the Tamron in the Landscape subforum if interested in looking:

I use mine for swim meets. Got a lot of great shots this summer. It's a nice focal range and AF works well. I haven't used GM glass to compare, but it's good enough for me. Image quality is great. The only downside is the slower aperture, but it's only 1/3 slower than the Sony 100-400, so I see it as a minor tradeoff to get the 50-100mm focal range. I can post some images soon.

Thanks for posting. From all the images I can see here, it's about the same optical performance as the 100-400GM I had in the past. I'm going to order it soon, this zoom range when traveling or hiking should really be useful.
You must’ve had a bad copy of the 100-400 GM, cause based on the pics on this thread, none of them come remotely close to my 100-400GM in sharpness, contrast, and just overall resolution

Nah, I had both. It comes down to copy variance, they are very close in general.

This has been my experience as well. The 100-400 GM that I had wasn't too bad, but it hadn't anything distinguishing in terms of sharpness or contrast. The Tamron lens is not perfect at 400mm but it is useable for what it can be used for.

I’ve had two copies of the 100-400 GM and both were razor sharp—perhaps this site degrades the images somewhat as part of the compression algorithms. And while I’ve not seen all of the images in this thread, I’ve perused about 20 pages (here and on Flickr) — and I can’t say I’ve seen an Image that I’d rate as razor sharp; most of the images exhibit some sort of haze or low micro contrast.

Which might have nothing to do with the lens itself...
So it should be clear that these two optics are definitely on the same level. Of course it's always possible that someone gets a subpar copy of the Tamron and an excellent copy of the Sony and then says that the Tamron gets eaten for breakfast by the Sony (or the other way around)...

Well sure on maybe a handful of images — but the preponderance of the same, and almost identical quality across all of those images would lean more towards the lens’ signature look.
