Went looking through the marketing blurbs for the VI, and it claims to simply use the X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor (same marketing name as the X-T5).

It's important to remember that fractions of a stop difference in DR between two cameras will not be apparent or useful for 99% of output.

According to the photonstophotos DR test, when starting at ISO 500, the X100VI has approximately one stop higher dynamic range compared to the X-T5. This is very significant and seems improbable unless some sort of raw enhancement is applied to the files.

Something seems off here. How can the X100VI have significantly higher dynamic range than the X-T5 when they both have similar sensors?

Wouldn’t be the first time that a test like this reports something inaccurately. Of course, since camera software figures into this it is possible that the newer camera incorporates some upgrade, and also possible that the XT5 test was run with a camera that hasn’t been updated. (Possible that the test plot represents data from earlier tests on the other cameras, rather than contemporary test of all?)

IN the real world though, whatever the differences among camera with the 40MP sensors may or may not be, cameras using these sensors give up nothing to earlier x-trans sensors and they bring added benefits.

He usually reports baked in noise reduction with the corresponding triangle, and none is used.

Curious about y'alls serial numbers. Mine is 4AA04xxx. Curious if the first 4 is the region and then it's the 4000th unit for that region. Are the other US folks similar?

Also, I knew I would, but I hate the way the unparked IBIS clunks when it's off. Really hope they have a FW update to lock it on power off.

4AA04XXX as well but that makes since considering you were ~5 minutes ahead of me

Fuji never mentioned increased dynamic range in their 100VI marketing. Seems like they would have if they had found an extra stop.

How can you explain this discrepancy?

No, but if I had to guess it might be he doesn’t have a large pool of 100VI samples submitted yet to average things out.

If it turns out to not be sample error or baked in NR, then we’d have to hear from Fujifilm to know for sure why. They usually respond to this kind of thing if everyone starts to take notice (like the “new” GFX 100 II sensor questions).

Received my update email from B&H this morning.

"We shipped out the first delivery of the X100VI on February 28th and have been working closely with Fujifilm to secure additional inventory to fill your order as quickly as possible. While we expect to receive additional inventory in March, based on Fujifilm’s projections, we will not have sufficient inventory to fill your order in March. We will update you as soon as we receive additional information from Fujifilm, which we hope to have within the next two weeks. Please note that both the Silver and Black versions of the X100VI are similarly affected. Also please note that this information is subject to change if Fujifilm’s shipping calendar changes.

We apologize for this situation and assure you we are working our hardest to resolve it quickly. While we regret this delay, we are confident that you will love this new camera and its innovative technology. If anything changes, we will send an update."

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please email us at orderinfo@bhphoto.com.

Thank you,
The B&H Team

My B&H order was placed 2:00 AM on Feb 20th. Order # 1104019120.

Missed out on first batch, and still shows as backordered, but did just get this in email from B&H:

"Thank you for your pre-order of the new Fujifilm X100VI. The response to this new camera has been tremendous and well in excess of Fujifilm’s projections.

We shipped out the first delivery of the X100VI on February 28th and have been working closely with Fujifilm to secure additional inventory to fill your order as quickly as possible. Based on the latest information that we have received, we expect to ship your order before the end of March. Please note that the limited supply affects both the Silver and Black versions of the X100VI. Also please note that this information is subject to change if Fujifilm’s shipping calendar changes.

We apologize for this situation and assure you we are working our hardest to resolve it quickly. While we regret this delay, we are confident that you will love this new camera and its innovative technology. If anything changes, we will be sure to send an update. Once your order ships out you will receive an email with the tracking information.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please email us at orderinfo@bhphoto.com.

Thank you,

The B&H Team"

I appreciate the update, and am optimistic for delivery sometime this month.

I got order confirmation at 2:12 am on Feb 20th and got an email stating I will NOT receive my black in March. It looks like I was real close to your order. My order number is close behind yours. I am now hopeful for April.

I ordered from BH at 1:03am est and it shipped on Feb 28. Just curious why folks, if you wanted it, didn't preorder immediately but waited for a couple of hours or to the next day.

I wasn't aware of it coming. I just happened to be up at about 2am on computer. Saw an announcement somewhere on internet. Clicked on a link and preordered it. Half asleep. . Figured I would use it for a vacation coming up. Specs looked good and made me interested. I had a Fuji EX-1 about 10 years ago. My last experience with a Fuji before this preorder.

That's similar to my experience. I regularly checked for a sale on a Sigma 18-50/2.8 for my A6700 and then I saw the X100VI announcement. I thought this smaller camera ticks all boxes: fits in a jacket, IBIS, 35mm in FF, Fuji sims and etc. I ordered it before 3am.

I ordered it on the 20th, but then had to cancel/reorder it to apply for the payboo card to “save the sales tax”. No biggie if I have to wait a month for it.

Interesting seeing Gerald reviewing this (his first time looking at one). @Fred Miranda you might be interested since he specifically wanted to review the sensor performance.

Unfortunately for still shooters, he was only looking at video DR from log — unless I drifted off during the street shooting parody and didn’t snap awake in time to hear about stills DR.

I wouldn’t sweat the RAF file DR of the X100VI. Even the V was enough for most single shot landscape shooting for me, and the only downside sometimes was the lower resolution in combination with the sensor size. The VI is quite competent for landscape (IMO), and I enjoy the XTrans sensor’s lack of aliasing.

I've read four theories that might explain the soft focus that Streetlife says he noticed: (1) He's all wet; (2) he's correct; (3) the noise reduction in the X100VI softens the image; (4) the camera's auto focus hunts a lot under certain conditions. Pal2tech noted this hunting. More testing should answer the question.
