p.33 #7 · Canon video thread for hybrid shooters...
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some information that I hope someone here can help me with. I have long wanted to use an external monitor for shooting video. I shoot mostly at 4K 120, and these settings were not possible using an external monitor with the R5. I believe it is possible now with the R5 mkii. However, from what research I have done, I can't find an external monitor that is compatible at 4K 120, or at least explicitly mentions this in their stats. Does anyone have a model they can recommend that will certainly work for this purpose?
Thanks

Hi Bill,
UPDATE: This monitor only records up to 59.94 with your camera
After googling around, it seems that you can shoot 4K 120p and record on your CF Express card while using almost any monitor that works with your camera.
If you are using the monitor to record 4K 120p, only a very expensive monitor might work as a recorder.
Please be sure this is true before making any expensive purchases.

You can shoot 4k 120 and record in camera and have full function of the monitor. Due to the limit of the HDMI output you can't record 120 unless you are using ProRes raw. If you are trying to view 120 footage on an external monitor directly then no monitor can do that due to that HDMI limit.

Thanks a lot, everyone.
I don't need the monitor to record, but just to aid in viewing during shooting.
Sorry for being dense. Are you saying that I can use the monitor to view at 4K 120 and record to the camera, but that I won't be able to playback that footage on the external monitor. If so, then it looks like I am right where I was hoping to be.
Do you have any suggestions for a good one? I do not need recording capabilities, but something of good quality and high durability would be desirable.

I’ve never used a monitor but I think this is true.
Since the tech is on a high level already and the shooters have a high level of expertise, it’s hard to jump in and keep up with new info without knowing the background fundamentals. I’ve learned some by participating here but have a long way to go.

I have both the Atomos Ninja V+ and the Shinobi II. If no need for recording then the Shinobi is outstanding and you can use the screen to control functions of the camera and focus. I use it a lot for Owl shooting in low light, much easier to see focus at dusk.

Bald Eagles in some Mississippi River backwaters in Northeast Missouri on Oct 16, 2025. There is a surprise visitor in the background in the last clip in this video. Do you see it? I did not until I worked the video up later. Canon R5MKII RF 200-800 with 2X, mostly at 1600mm @ 4k. Some clips really too far but I have not shot much lately so I thought why not!

I've been sidelined for the last few weeks, but I did manage to get out a couple days in the Fall colours. Here's some footage I captured and cobbled together into a video.
