Ugly, with terrible choice of fonts, bright screw heads inside and outside the lens.
Never mind the optical performance - it's an aesthetic fail.

Six different font styles on one lens! Not at all attractive looking IMO.

Vignetting is definitely noticeable and, at this point, I would consider it the main drawback of the lens. I will share test shots soon, but from my measurements, it’s stronger than what I see with the Voigtländer 28mm f/2.8 Color-Skopar, which itself isn't exactly famous for low vignetting.

I was anticipating similar vignetting as the CV has quite a bit. I did not expect it to be better given the size of the front and rear elements. More though is meh.

Just put some gaffer's tape over the "Thypoch Limited" part and I think it'd be great, but I like the exposed brass screw heads, so I guess I'm weird that way.

Ignoring the hideous fonts for a moment, this thing also looks like an ergonomics nightmare..

The CV 28mm f2.8 type I and the 35mm f3.5 take some getting used to, but this one has way worse ergonomics..

I‘d pick the CV 28mm f2.8 any time - type I or II depending on preference

I know there is some precedent for goofy looking, ill conceived, ergonomically challenged M mount glass, but this thing is a total abomination, and yes, why on earth would anyone reach for this vs the CV CS? Because it's "hefty?"

What if it performs really well on the Sony sensor? The CV CS doesn't particularly shine there...
Also, we have not seen its performance yet, other than a comment about vignetting. Maybe it has a really nice rendering...

Ifs and buts, candy and nuts.

All we know is what it looks like, and that's what all of the discussion is about to this point.

In my opinion, CV CS 28/2.8 works pretty well on Sony sensor, though it needs f8 for best corner-to-corner results to mitigate for the sensor stack (especially for improving the extreme corners). I haven't found any better performing 28mm rangefinder lens for use on Sony (in my case A7CII) from those that are designed/optimized for digital M sensor stack or from old legacy film era rangefinder lenses. The ones that are designed/optimized for Sony sensor stack definitely perform better (e.g. the native CV E-mount 28mm options, Laowa 28/1.2, 7Artisans 28/1.4 FE-Plus) but that's to be expected. They are not in the same size/weight category though.

I'm also interested in how this Eureka will perform on Sony, I hope Fred's review will also cover that. I doubt that it would be an excellent match there since the back element seems quite small and it appears that it will be fairly close to the sensor. Also the choice by Thypoch to also make an X-mount version of this lens along with M (with no other mirrorless versions) implies that it might not perform so well on other FF mirrorless. Would be interesting to see the results though.

I'm not planning to buy one of these as I have 3 other lenses in the shopping list until March and I already have lots of other 28mm lenses, including the CV 28/2.8 and 4 tiny MS-Optics 28mm versions.

In Japan Shoten Kobo online store (they are the official distributor for these in Japan) is already taking pre-orders for these:
https://www.stkb.jp/shopdetail/000000002374/
They have the M-mount, X-mount and M-mount + X-mount adapter kits in both colors. They expect to ship from March.

p.2 #9 · Thypoch Eureka 28mm f/2.8 Review

I started wondering why my review sample had a glossier paint finish than the production versions appearing online. I've since learned that the lens I've had since September is a pre-production demo, and that Thypoch updated the optical design based on tester feedback, including mine. I don't know exactly what was improved, but we both agreed it's best to pause the full review until I receive a production unit.

Since my reviews lean more technical than most, it makes sense to wait. I want to show what the lens can truly do. I have enjoyed shooting with this demo copy, but now that I know the optics have been revised, the right move is to evaluate the final version.

In the meantime, I will continue posting a few sample images until the production lens arrives.

Oh, this is good news! I had written it off when you mentioned the vignetting was worse than the color-skopar. Hopefully some of the changes they made were to address that.

Wise choice Fred.

Will you be testing coma and flare resistance? I noticed on your Simera 28/1.4 review you did not address those two items but they are important for a fast wide I think!

Those sample images look quite promising (with the exception of the falloff on the last image). While there are limits to what can be discerned from low-resolution images, the bokeh looks very nice and the corners seem to be free of any nasty smearing. I am looking forward to your review of a production sample.

“ The CV28 has pretty high vignetting and distortion, and judging from the few samples so far on their website this seems to be a better performer in those regards.”

Unfortunately, you are wrong on both counts.

I noticed Artralab quietly started selling their tiny 28 f2.8 M mount lens similar to this Eureca, but I can’t find any reviews. Has anyone heard anything about how it performs? Looks like theirs also comes with a lens hood.

https://www.artralab.hk/products/artralab-28mm-f-2-8-%CF%8628-full-frame-m-mount

I’m one of those people who can’t stand heavy vignetting and hoping that this Eureca or the Artralab does better than the Color Skopar. Otherwise, I guess I’ll have to go the Elmarit route and pay up

Wow, didn't know about that Artralab lens. Nice find! Looking for any possible options before I go with an Elmarit as well

Sorry to disappoint but the vignetting of the Artralab looks pretty awful in the shots on their instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/DSA0nrmkwa8/?img_index=10
