I have been using the 100-400 more for landscape and foliage stuff, not so much for birds because it's just not long enough on my A7RIII most of the time even with the 1.4 TC. I am waiting for the rumored A7000...

Perhaps Sony will come up with something similar to "DO".
Based on what Sony/Canon did with the 400 and Canon did with the 600, I think they might be able to pull off that weight on a non-DO 500/4 (more likely without the TC though).

The built-in TC is just an awesome convenience. Sony's 1.4x TC is pretty small in size compared to Canon's and perhaps Sony can design a smaller and lighter built-in version.
Honestly, I think I would prefer a lighter 500/4. That was my favorite Canon lens. I still remember when their current 7-pound came in the market and I bought it right away. If Sony can make an even lighter 500/4 GM with improved rendering, I would probably get one.

Very nice set, Douglas, and I’m pretty sure I’ve photographed that same stand of trees in your last image

Again, Canon missed the boat on what many people wanted, and Nikon supplied; the 500 f5.6 PF.
Both Canon and Sony could make one with a built-in TC, now that newer bodies are able to AF better at f8.
And that would be a lot less expensive than f4 versions.

Also mounted it on my A7RIII and it was really really hard to get on and almost impossible to get off. AF seemed to work fine, but since it's dark and raining I couldn't tell how decentered it might be.
Then I got to looking at the mount once I got it off the camera (with some effort) and discovered that the mount was quite bent.
Look at the two screws in the 2nd picture and the round-ish shape on the smooth portion of the mount. Clearly this lens has taken a really hard hit from the rear mount cap across to the end of the lens.
It's all bent to heck. BGN grade now for sure.
It's going back.
I had this feeling when I saw the size of the box compared to the size of the lens (I've rented one before).

Well, they sent me a robotic sounding email back today with an immediate RMA and a promise to talk to the person that packaged the lens.
It will be in the mail tomorrow back to them and now I search again for a 100-400. I may have to buy new from the local pro shop and trade some stuff in on it to get the cost down.
