there needed to be a choice of own it, love it, but use it sporadically for certain dedicated types of photos, for me it is birds in flight, particularly ospreys from late april until august, this time of year, not so much unless i want to practice on seagulls. on the A9, it is just the best wildlife combo i have ever had.
The 100-400GM also does great for these type of shots (your 2 images above) where the background is a bit more distant.
When the background is a bit too close, I would prefer a 500/4 with extender built-in. Perhaps the next Sony?

Sure, I'll take a 500/4 with TC built in and weight equal to Canon 300/2.8 IS II....thank you much
