Likewise I have respect for those at DPR but choosing the worst cameras/lenses reeks of stupidity and unnecessary negativity . The products chosen are very debatable and diametrically opposite of many other reviewers!
I have tested the 50/1.8s on the Z7 and I find it an amazing lens as the lens has personality and character ! I will pick up the Z6 and 50/1.8s when timing suits.

Every modern lens now demands uber sharpness and it is finding the balance of smooth bokeh particularly that most lenses now have aspherical elements. Learn your lenses and use them appropriately. If ultra smooth

Agreed - what bugs me the most about it is that it lacks objectivity. You completely ignore the fact that the 50 f1.8S is one of the best lenses Nikon has released in years from a distortion, sharpness, vignetting, resistance to flare and CA standpoint at a fairly reasonable price and size/weight (all things that can be measured and compared objectively), but then apparently judge it solely on a subjective attribute of "bokeh".

Luke, congratulations! The first shot demonstrates how smooth the 50/1.8s really is

For me this lens delivers over its price tag, it behaves more like a top-of-the-line lens than some basic 50mm lens.

So far I really love this lens. Sure the bokeh could be a bit smoother but to have absolute sharpness along with nice creamy bokeh is difficult and it won't be cheap.
I think Nikon is going the sharpness across the frame modern lens approach for this lens. So you get some onion layer and other not so nice stuff associated with asph element and may be a bit more than that but at this price and size, it came very very close to Otus level of performance in so many aspects. To call it worse lens of 2018 basically said that Otus is barely above worse lens of the year. I have not compare Sigma Art 50/1.4 bokeh against 50/1.8s but 50/1.8s does not really give up anything else much against Sigma Art either.
Granted Canon 50/1.2 looks incredible but at almost 4x the price, one would expect it to be better.
I hope that as Nikon goes with sharpness with 50/1.8s, I hope 50/1.2 may give up a bit of sharpness but go for the overall rendering. Then we will have the perfect pair of 50s

I agree about the two 50 approach. The 1.8s seems to tick a lot of boxes and be a good all around lens. Compared to the 55 1.8 Sony I have, the Sony appears to have nicer bokeh but is lacking in some other areas the Nikon lens excels at. I think the criticisms have been unnecessarily harsh given how this lens compares in The current mirrorless world. I actually prefer the Nikon sensible releases so far and I think it helps make the system very approachable for everybody.

^ very green in your neck of the woods. I'd assume all of Canada would be snowed in.
Down right warm here in Kansas USA, 65 today-rode the Harley 200 miles! Crazy weather.

Common misconception - Coastal BC gets snow maybe 1-2x a year at sea level and it's rarely more than a couple inches. It's rare enough that it can bring Vancouver to a standstill (people don't know how to drive in the snow + not enough snowplows).

Most often 40-50F during winter. I can still get to the snow in 30 minutes though - up in the nearby mountains.

Picked up my Z 50mm f1.8S today. It is certainly SHARP! Bokeh is pretty good as well. A few different apertures and subject matter to see what it can do.

A few from a snow day this month. Z6 did admirably with falling snow and AF, and the lack of CA is really refreshing.

Certainly does look impressive. Also makes me wonder what Nikon might do with a full-on professional (and no doubt very expensive) 50 for Z mount in the future.

I'm still on the fence about this lens. I read the all the reviews I could online. It's weird... seems everything I could find is so non-committal about saying it's great vs just very good. I'd like to have at least one native mount lens for my Z and I do have a love affair with the 50. So much so, however, that I've become spoiled by some great ones that I can adapt easily. Still, having a lens with AF and no adapter that lives on the camera for the times I just want to grab and run is a luxury not to be taken lightly...

I completely respect the work of the photographers who have posted here and been wowed by their images in other lens threads (completely wowed, in fact). I'm not quite as wowed by the images here but I'd love to hear their take on this lens vs others in their arsenal.

It's not helping that this thread sort of died on the vine while the threads on certain F-mount offerings seem to be thriving.
