What do you guys think of the case that comes with the lens? Seems like an odd shape for a lens case and they are giving it with all the new Z lenses.

I have to say cases have been disappointing from Nikon and other brands. I buy a Nikon and get a poorly fitted soft case. I buy an expensive lens from Zeiss and don't even get a case.
THe best case I ever got was from Irix, the 15mm blackstone comes with an amazing hard neoprene case and I wish some of the other manufacturers would put in a tiny bit of effort.

Personally, I never use the provided cases/pouches. They just stay factory sealed in the box. Camera bags/backpacks have more than enough padding imo.

A few from a snow day this month. Z6 did admirably with falling snow and AF, and the lack of CA is really refreshing.

These are perhaps my favorite shots I've seen with this lens. Let me explain...

Coming from Sony-e-mount-land, I had the 55/1.8 and thought it was a fantastic lens. Then, after awhile, I started losing favor with it. I wasn't sure why. The lens seemed to deliver everything I wanted but I couldn't put my finger on it. I traded it for the 50mm f/1.4 Zony which is basically a GM lens without the badge. The images blew me away. They looked so much more refined. The colors, a great combination of sharpness and soft blending... one of the greatest 50's I've ever shot and I have at least ten 50's still in my collection.

I don't expect this to make sense to anyone but I'll try. Comparing the 2 lenses, I realized that the 55/1.8 was flat in the focused area but had good pop from the OOF areas. Picture this: if someone was standing in a landscape with a shallow DOF showing their full-body length, they would look to me like a cardboard cutout in the field. Something about the transition from focus to OOF didn't appear real and the focus area felt flat... hence the cardboard cutout feel... The 50/1.4 was magical in comparison. The blending felt seamless and there was a lot of depth felt even within the zone completely in focus.

I see a little bit of those same attributes in the 50/1.8S (the cardboard cutout look), yet the images from BSPhotog exhibit none of it to me. Those portraits have great depth. So I'm still not sure what to think...

Two weeks of above average temperatures in Vancouver and everything is blooming at the same time. This 50mm doesn't have the 'dreamy' quality of 58mm but overall I'm pleased with sharpness and rendering.

I chose this 50mm f1.8S over the 105f1.4E. Had to buy a new camera but I'm astonished at the IQ of this lens with the Z7 sensor.

Z6 is on loan from nps
they don't loan out S glass yet
bought the 50 for this trial.

set it up this morning
did some testing around the house, I have two sessions later today.
so far so good.
want to jot down some initial findings in case I end up writing a comparison with the Z6, Eos R, A7III/RIII

Z6 with 2.00 EYE AF is very good, not quite 100%, but it is REALLY good, like 96% lol
nikon should be REALLY proud of themselves.
this camera is 10000x better than an Eos R.

the 4 year old is an IMPOSSIBLE beast to shoot, Sony EYE AF handles it really well. Nikon is right there! close enough to spend money on nikon gear right now!
it works from distance, unlike canon's offering - which is pathetic.
the beast didn't let me shoot her today, and she has long hair, so did not get any glamour shots of her lol.

w/b on the screen and evf doesn't seem accurate.
set up a manual w/b using expo disk
looks too green on camera.
looks better on monitor once downloaded.

JPG engine is solid! I wonder if it's the same as the d850/d500 combo?
skin tones look good and easier to dial in (even with jpg) than Sony raw/jpg
metering seems solid, perhaps a little better than Sony
ergo is good.
I am a little frustrated when using the F1/2 buttons in combination with the dials - seems a bit awkward for me. I miss the old buttons for Af mode/etc on the D850. can't have everything!

I really wish they put out ONE 1.4 portrait lens by now, either 50/85, c'mon!
the 50 1.8s is a good lens, don't take it the wrong way!
something more exotic, one year in, would have been nice. perhaps that is what is hurting them with regard to market share at the moment.

sharing generic images, showing jpg
there seems to be a sharpening issue with the raws IMO

again, sorry nothing glamorous here, just showing some testing images to display some:
skin tones,
fringing,
bokeh,
etc, from moving sliders for a minute in LR

here is the good and the bad from today in PHL
in a few, you can spot some harsh bokeh, which I never realized until today.

to make sure you're up to speed....
last month I had three Sony bodies, a9 a7riii and a7iii and 8 lenses
sold the a9, 135gm, 24gm, 50 1.4za, 55 1.8za, 28/2,
all I have left are the two bodies, and my money makers:
12-24G my commercial WA.
35/85 1.4, the 85 GM is my best boy.

my third body is now an investigative setup. for now, it's the z6 and 35/50S

I am REALLY impressed though with this lens
for some reason I feel like I am shooting with the 50L, but updated, so the 50 RF 1.2
I had the Eos R and 50 RF 1.2L on a demo a few weeks ago, so I have it in my head (a bit) this gear.
and I'm looking at these images in my computer today, thinking, man these canon colors.
but it's nikon! I have to keep reminding myself.

never realized how much the Sony colors were killing me!
shots in my house, shots outside, it's crazy.

anyhow, I REALLY wish this 50 1.8S was a 1.4 or 1.2 sure, but it's REALLY good!
and it's light, and it's cheap (relatively speaking).

nothing amazing here, just putting it through it's paces and learning 2.00.
ALL JPG
I only have a 16gb card and I'm currently shooting uncompressed, although I will soon start compressing.
no crops, so pardon composition, just sharing them as they were captured.
I do use an expo disk for w/b, most times.

Cheers,
And Happy Memorial Day to my fellow Americans far and near.

p.s. sorry for the wordy mess above, I'm thinking aloud as I consider many thoughts on gear right now.
p.p.s. I am noticing that I can't play with the highlights "as much" as with the Sony files, so that stinks.
