To be perfectly clear - I have no other issues with the Z build. Rubber wearing on the grip under the fingernails (I guess I should cut them shorter) and somehow the rubber peeled off a thin layer on the right side of the body on a small panel there.
Apart from that - zero issues after a year (and the camera has seen snowy BC mountains, hot/humid jungles of Colombia, Burning Man to name the few places).
Historically Nikon had issues with rubber grip stretching out and peeling off (I think I had to have it replaced on my D8xx camera 2 or 3 times in the past).
Given your travel locations and use in the extreme weather elements, I wonder if using bug spray (deet especially) and sun screens may have had any impact on the rubber (residual on your hands). I know I had issues caused by them on the rubber on a set of binoculars the last few years.

It's entirely possible - though the side rubber damage is totally different than in the Nikon's I've owned over the last 10 years. My way of using them hasn't changed much. It's pretty well shown in this thread on dpreview - https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4373735 (except for me the whole layer of the rubber bubbled / peeled off that small panel).
As for the damage under the fingernails - it may be because the grip shape is different / body is held in a different way.
I haven't taken any photos of either - my camera got to Nikon today (let's see how long they take to 'estimate'). I hope I won't see the dreaded 'parts hold' status.

I hope it gets fixed quickly. The fingernail scratch feels to me that smaller camera size and grip shape plays a role. Grip is deep and very nice to hold, but, somehow presses my middle finger against the body to stabilize hold. With D810, I notice I hook fingers around grip in a way first joint of middle finger plays the stabilizing role. Very interesting.
My rubber grip has the same fingernail damage as well, although my camera is only a few month old and I never had this with any camera before. I'll wait if it gets worse.

Yeah - I waited till it gets worse and if it falls apart again I have another 1 year of warranty to do the process again.
My camera was just estimated by Nikon Service:
Problem: GRIP/COVER FITMENT NEEDS ADJUST/REPLACE RUBBER GRIP ON RIGHT SIDE FALL APART CLEAN PRODUCT & CHECK ALL OPERATIONS CHK THE BODY
Total cost of repair: $0.00*
Camera sent: 25.11.
Camera received by Nikon: 27.11
Estimate and shop: 28.11
Shipped back: 29.11
The only downsides are that I had to pay for shipping to Ontario from BC (for a warranty repair) & they shipped it back Purolator Ground (which will take a whole week to get back here). Still - 12 day service turnaround is pretty damn good.
