Same shot, within a couple minutes of each other.
1st is with 1.4x TC, 2nd is 2xTC.
Both were shot in DX Mode.

I have the 600PF and I am trying to decide if my next lens will be adding the 800PF or buying the Sony 600 GM since I am in a split system.

I have two questions for 800mm PF owners.

1) have you used lens with an extension tube to reduce MFD for small birds and if so, how well does the image quality hold up?

2) have you used 1.4X TC for 1120mm at f9 and if so how well does it acquire bird targets near MFD and how well does it track moving targets?

Thanks
Bill

I've used (tried) your second question. It does reasonably well. But f/9 is too slow for me (mainly aperture). It tracked flying birds like osprey and gulls well too. But didn't try fast flying small birds because I'm not skilled enough to capture them in frame at 1120mm . So I sold the TC soon.

Are you sure you won't be happy with cropping? Below picture is 4k crop (more than 2X). With current sensors and slow lenses I prefer to keep the ISO low and crop than adding TC.

A couple from this morning to work. Nothing special. Just 'practicing' BIF after a break .

Love the bokeh of Ruddy Turnstone shot. Still amazed by the VR and hand holdability of the 800mm. Keep the tripod mount at the top and I hold lens camera like gimbal. I think this help to balance it better.

Here's a couple more shot with 2xTC and in DX Mode.

I really haven't tried the 2x on this lens too much, but I do use the 1.4x quite a bit. While adding the 2x certainly is far from ideal, it's serviceable in the right conditions.

Visited burrowing owl colony in FL. No babies yet and almost no movement. Owls were just sitting outside the burrows. There were lots of rabbits around.

Anyway still surprised by the VR of the lens/camera. Very sharp images @ 1/25 and 1/30 sec hand held is not difficult at all.

I've never used mine with extension tubes, but I use it with the 1.4TC quite a bit. Zero issues with AF for moving targets, doesn't really feel much different than the "bare" lens to me, at least on my Z9. I'm often shooting at dusk where lighting is poor and contrast is very low as well, so in my mind it passes that 'torture test' with flying colors. No issues I've noticed near MFD, but when I have the 1.4TC on, I'm not at MFD as often. At MFD you've got so many pixels on your subject that you might find that just cropping achieves similar results to using a 1.4TC.

These were taken with the 1.4TC, no problem tracking BIF headed towards the camera at dusk on old FW:

And this one was just over 92 feet away - IQ holds up quite well:

I live in Kansas and I love our Prairie Chickens, both Greater (orange neck sack) and Lesser (threatened, purple-ish neck sack). I was able to go out in far western KS this Saturday with my Z9 and a rented 800 PF. Now I want to own the 800. What a lens. I was worried it would be too much lens, too long, for the birds. No, it was great. What a wonderful morning.

Awesome that you could shoot them. I shot them back in WI in 2012 with D4 and 500mm+1.7x. Still had to crop. D4 was the best for low light. But the birds would leave the ground before sun rise. Still managed to get some portraits. Not many action shots.

(I know it's about 800mm PF lens, hope it's ok post an old image to show much things have improved over 10 years)
