My first decent photos of a Yellow Thornbill - a tiny bird barely the size of my thumb. Even though I was close to MFD of the 800mm PF, these still needed decent crops! I was just in the right spot at the right time as today I was there again and not a Yellow Thornbill to be seen.

Posting these more because I found the composition interesting more than anything else. Yes, that really was the blue reflected from the sky as the sun was rising.

spent some time the last few days just shooting the local birds from the porch. we're starting to get some migratory ones it looks like.
800PF + 1.4x + 2X just testing for sharpness, bokeh, etc.
I don't have much experience shooting small birds, so also just working on technique and whatnot. I don't know that I'd post any of these to my flickr, but I was surprised that the 1.4x and 2x both did super well.

I went down with the virus that I somehow managed to dodge for the last 3 years (all it took was couple months of petri dish of child's daycare). Totally kicked my ass over the last 10 days, so I didn't have much energy to photograph anything. Finally on a mend.

Very nice. As a matter of interest, what state are American Bittern's in as a species in your part of the world? I attended a talk yesterday and was shocked to learn that the Australasian Bittern is now on the critically endangered list here in NZ, less than 1,000 left. Usual suspects; habitat loss, introduced predators, run over on road etc. The species is endemic to Australia, NZ and New Caledonia.
