To clarify, if that was artistic intent to use 5-6 second clips and not a limitation due to difficulty handholding steady shots for longer, then you probably don't need a gimbal (at least in terms of shots where the camera is moving horizontally).

With regards to difficulty walking smoothly on uneven snow-packed paths...well the gimbal will relieve of a lot of the need to walk smoothly as it will provide a lot of the stabilization but you'd still need to walk *carefully* because slipping and falling would be detrimental to the body...both human and camera.

Outside of that, if you don't need

Thanks Carlos, although I'm not majorly "happy" with the walking footage, I'm not disgusted with it either - it's OK for now. The walking movement clips will only be a very small percentage of the overall length of any of my wildlife videos. To date I have been using basic simple pans and tilts for my establishing shots and that's been fine, it's just that I want to add some "walking through the woods" type of footage to add a bit more interest, and driving to locations footage if possible. If budget were not a major factor I would probably get the DJI RS4 mini or the Osmo Pocket 3 and have some extra fun. My Youtube channel is just a tiny channel with less than a thousand followers and I have no plans to push to increase it - I never ask people to like and subscribe to my channel and have no plans to try to monetize it - it's all been just for fun and personal enjoyment. My wife, who is also a nature buff, loves my videos and watches them endlessly so I'm happy with that.

Thanks again,
Rudy

Hi Carlo, action99 and artsupreme..., guys, thanks very much for taking the time to watch my practice footage and to respond with your very helpful comments and suggestions.

Just to clarify something, I don't want to be seen in my wildlife videos at all, not even my feet. I don't want the video to be about me in any way, but rather about the locations and the wildlife subjects living there.

Regarding personalizing them, I really enjoy doing the species research, writing the scripts and narrating my videos, but I don't want to be a visual part of them.

the idea of adding motion to your video simply to have it is not the most worthwhile thing to add. If you dont want to be a part of it, why are you entertaining the idea of walking videos? Why bother with movement at all? Stand still and record, nature will do the rest. Nature IS the movement, your subject is what moves. You dont have to pan (unless you're following your subject), and you dont have to truck or dolly, standing still, cutting angles, that's all you need, start very basic, master locked down shots before moving on to dynamic shots with movement.

Hi Charlie,

Thank you for your comment and your advice, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

I have been an avid photographer since 1970 but only started wildlife photography about 15 years ago and for the last 3 years I've been trying my hand at wildlife videos. I agree with you on the importance of starting out by mastering basic locked down tripod shots. I have been doing exactly that for the last 3 years and have completed about 100 wildlife videos in this way. To give you an idea of the subjects I film you can scan my video thumbnails on my small unadvertised Youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@Rudy.Pohl.Ottawa/videos

As I sit here in Ottawa in the closing days of a long hard Winter and chomping at the bit for Spring to come I've been planning on how I can try something a little different this coming season in my videography rather than doing the same old stuff again and again. I need a new challenge and I think that adding some handheld "walking in the woods" kind of footage might be just the thing. It's within my ability (I think) and certainly within my budget. As noted above, I'm working on a little video that features this technique and I'll be posting it in the next day or so. If you have the time come on back and see what you think and leave a comment. I'd appreciate your feedback.

Cheers,
Rudy

Right, I was going off of that, I do video as well, however, most of my stuff doesnt go on youtube, although I do have multiple youtube channels, one about camera gear https://www.youtube.com/@CharlieVN

I did video for years before I created a YT channel, and do mostly sony reviews, but I'm here in the canon section awaiting the V1, which I'm hoping will be amazing. if you're young and good looking, putting yourself out there is a no brainer and people will be interested, making random stuff that people are interested in is very difficult, making stuff your loved ones are willing to watch is very difficult.

once you know the YT ropes, you dont have to promote your stuff, youtube will do it for you because it makes them money.

video in general is so much harder than photos IMO, did photos since 2005 ish, maybe in 2015 I jumped into video, then eventually YT just as a random way to improve my speaking ability, and it has lead to incredible opportunities. My channel is small, but I have other channels that really hit. it's funny because same person can be successful and fail at the same time.

Hi Charlie,

I just checked out your gear review channel. Very good and very interesting! I watched your full video comparing the Osmo Pocket 3 to the DJI Action 5 Pro. Makes me want to run out and buy the Pocket 3. I can't believe I'm trying to do a similar thing with my regular mirrorless camera setup (Canon R5 + 16mm lens). Oh well, that's where life has me at moment so I'm trying to make the best of it.

Cheers,
Rudy

Charlie,

Can you tell me how channels like this are getting away with using copyrighted music? My first test video got a copyright strike for the little chant I put in as a placeholder for audio. Also, is there a simple formula or scale for how much money is made per X amount of views when a YouTube video is monetized?

the video is either not getting money for this, that will go towards the artists or they had to buy pay for the licensing, not sure if smaller channels/non monetize have all of those options.

when it comes to monetization, views is only one part of the formula, you've got subject matter, and you've got video duration. If you can, your audience really appreciates long deep video, on my other channel, I make compilations, and can get incredible amounts of watch time, and because of that, there is a distorted view on pay. if your primary language is NOT english, another hit on pay.

but if you want a basic idea, a 10 minute video with 1000 views probably pays around $10. There's a reason why a lot of creators do podcasts, because if you scale that, 100 minute video with 1000 views might pay a whole not more, not exactly 1:1, but it could be like $30 instead, but the real money is selling your own products or getting leads to a business. From that, you can make far more, not camera channels though, that's simply my passion, not a whole lot of money involved unless you get big sponsors, and even for my dinky little channel, I get hit up for reviews and smaller sponsors on a daily basis. not really worth my time and it often spoils the fun. My channel makes about $200 a month and I havent made a video for a few months, and it's nice getting paid, however, shilling products, I dont enjoy, many of the offerings I get, I simply buy on my own, the supply of free stuff you can get as a creator is a LOT, and you'll be on the hook for it if you accept..... and a lot of the reason why I dont do it is because I post when I feel like it. Japanese brands on the other hand, they'll only loan it, and expect a whole lot. Lets just say that a few certain well known brands have came to me, I declined, and it's soured relations between us.

anyhow, too much rambling, if you want to make money, camera channel aint it, it's more because I enjoy photography a lot, and now video. here's my dead/abandoned IG account: https://www.instagram.com/photography_by_charlie/ and you can get some brand deals for IG, but it's nowhere near the level of YT.

the pocket 3 is an amazing little camera however I use the action a lot more these days, even the action 4. I use the action 5 for more personal use, the action 4 for work use, it's 90% as good, same sensor, same stabilization, slightly inferior IQ. I hang it on my neck and go, my main video camera has been the S9 + 18-40..... it's incredible for everything, walking, vacation, low light..... however, I do need to place a preorder on the Canon V1 as soon as it hits the market. there's a 200g savings when lens is accounted for. if it's not up to my standards, bummer.

about walking cameras
low light, somewhat normalish FOV, gorgeous IQ that rivals mirrorless, pocket 3
medium to good light, wide as hell FOV, Rugged, POV style, action 4/5

either are easy work for walking shots, I lean more towards the actions because they are rugged, I want that crazy wide FOV, and use for POV.

for me, either of these are secondary incidental cameras, but if I'm going to have a fun time at a party, the pocket 3 is great for that, sporting activities, with my kids, travel, the action series..... if I could only have one, the action 5, if I were on a budget, a $200 action 4 is surprisingly good.

Much appreciated. This was strait out of the camera. I shot it 120fps then speed it up a bit in post.

Thanks Charlie, so a short video with tons of views could pay the same as a long video with less views (watch time) if I'm understanding you correctly.

If you ever figure out how they are getting away with the music thing let me know. My test video was not monetized and I got dinged for it, and there's less than 200 views.

Nice photos on IG.

Thank You Rudy,
I had been shooting stills out the truck window, and very carefully set up on my tripod for video and got one clip and he was off to the river!

"Walking in the Woods"

Hi Guys,

Well, it's a day late, but I finally completed my little video where I'm trying to do some hand-held shooting with my R5 plus RF16mm while walking in the woods..., but doing so without using a gimble or an Osmo Pocket 3. As I mentioned a few days ago, what I'm hoping to do is introduce a little more interest into my wildlife videos by including some simple movement using some "walking in the woods" type of footage.
QUESTION: Does it work?
