"Walking in the Woods"
Hi Guys,
Well, it's a day late, but I finally completed my little video where I'm trying to do some hand-held shooting with my R5 plus RF16mm while walking in the woods..., but doing so without using a gimble or an Osmo Pocket 3. As I mentioned a few days ago, what I'm hoping to do is introduce a little more interest into my wildlife videos by including some simple movement using some "walking in the woods" type of footage.
QUESTION: Does it work?

Rudy,
Yes, it works.
Well put together and you told the story well.
Video, still, music and narration all worked well.
For my taste, I would say not too much B-roll.
Just a tiny bit to set the scene is what I like to see.

Rudy,
Yes it works and here's my two cents. If it was me I would mix up the shots a little bit. I would hang the R5 from a tripod and walk with it just above the snow, then I would put it up high into the air close to some branches, then I would take your 100-500 and zoom in on one of those red leaves blowing in the wind, maybe even some bark or frost close ups on the trees mixed in too. Is there a little creek flowing too? All these little added detail shots would give it a little more variety when edited between your walking shots.
I think I saw some focus breathing in a couple spots while walking so you might consider putting in in MF for those shots.
The owl footage is amazing and great photos as well. Keep up the good work.

Hi Brett,
Thanks for taking the time to watch my little short and for offering your comprehensive response and creative suggestions - they're all great! I'm sure that adding these kinds of elements will really improve the visual richness and interest of any outdoor nature video. I'm reminded of your Indonesia video that had a lot of these kinds of visual elements and how they added to the overall experience. Good stuff.
Unfortunately, during the outing that you see pictured here I was under a tight time constraint so my one and only objective during my time in the park was to see if I could film myself walking along these bumpy, snow-packed, slippery trails without the resulting footage being so shaky and bumpy that people couldn't stand to watch it. The Boreal Owl was completely unexpected so once I found it I tried to get some additional footage, a few stills and some B-roll and turn it all into a little wildlife video. Once the weather gets better I'll make a day trip of it and come armed with a shot-list which will include your suggestions.

I was shooting some footage for a project the other day and noticed some interesting flares / ghosting / artifacts while I had this JJC variable ND on my RF50 F1.4 VCM. Decided to test it again, which turned into a slightly rambling 4.5 minute video (after cutting ). Sorry in advance. Feel free to crank up the playback speed or just scan.
Anyway, I'm curious if this is something specific to the cheap JJC filters or if people with NISI and other brands are experiencing the same.
No color grading on this one beyond straight conversion from CLog2 to Rec709.

Hi Nate,
I watched this footage twice and I must admit that I still can't see what it is that you're pointing out. You refer to it as "it" and you direct us to observe it in the lower third of the frame and you say something like "there it is", but I can't see anything obvious. Sorry.
By the way, you've got a great voice quality, are you planning on doing some narration in your video? Hope so.

Some footage from tonight with the R5II + 50 F1.4 VCM. YouTube compression really continues to do a number on the dark areas, especially the sky. Audio from a random find in the YouTube music library.

Thank you, Rudy! I've done a little bit of narration in the past and might consider it as an ongoing thing to do when the video calls for it.
As for the "it".... you can see it most clearly around1:40 and again around 2:08 - 2:25. See the screenshots attached. I'm circling in red the flaring that appears when I have my hand just below the window, as if the light is being reflected.

Spring Visitors - Goldeneye Ducks in Ottawa
I had a lovely afternoon down by the Ottawa River the other day. It was really nice to get out in the milder weather.

Camera: Canon R5
Lenses: Canon RF 100-500, RF 1.4x tc, Canon RF 16mm f2.8 (shot in 4K60p crop mode making it effectively 27mm wide and thereby eliminates the dreaded corner IBIS wobble)
Codecs: 4K60p, 4K120p, C-Log3 (Note: a real dynamic range challenge, a black and white bird in full sun, ouch!)
Editing: Davinci Resolve 19

Very enjoyable video, Rudy.
You were really close to the ducks in the first part of your video, a different point of view.
Nice story and well paced audio.

I like it-
Sometimes to much "b-roll" will loose the viewer or make them skip through it. Its all a balancing act but such a different thing us photographers are used to doing-

Hi all
I’m not fully satisfied with the results I’m getting using the Canon-provided CLog2 to REC709 conversion LUT. On the other hand, the in-camera CLog View Assist—which provides a REC709 preview on the LCD screen and HDMI output—looks perfect to me.
I’m wondering if there’s any way to obtain or export that internal LUT used for the View Assist, as it delivers a much more pleasing and accurate image compared to the official conversion LUT.

I only have experience in Davinci resolve and adobe premiere. In both cases, their built in color space conversions have worked well for me so I’d recommend that. If you’re using FCP I’m not sure. But maybe it has its own native conversion tool which could work better than the LUTs?
For what it’s worth, I’ve used those LUTs in my Atomos monitor and they’ve worked perfectly. So I’m presuming it’s an editing software issue and not a LUT issue.
