Northern Hawk Owl chilling on a stick

This little video shows a Northern Hawk Owl perched on a stick chilling out and looking around his patch. It was a dreary, overcast day with no definition or colours in the sky and almost no colour in the owl. Normally I would not keep or post a video with such poor image quality, but I really liked this perky little Owl and I wanted a reminder of it.

Another reason I kept the footage was because of how hard it was to get it. I got up at 4:30 am and drove an hour in bad weather to get to the general location before sunrise. I walked 2.5 kilometers with a 30-pound backpack plus a 10-pound fluid head and tripod. I stepped into a groundhog hole hidden by the snow, went flying and almost broke my freakin' neck... and got covered in burrs! I'm pushing 76 years old now so this kind of stuff is no longer a walk in the park for me (although I love it!). So yea, you're darn right I'm going to keep the footage!

Enjoy!
Rudy

Awesome cinema rig, Rob! Great recording solution with the side handle, and also the stability bonus when setting it down.
You've really done a bang-up job on researching and assembling this gear. It looks fabulous and you've certainly raised the bar in the Canon hybrid video department.
Cheers,
Rudy

Cool looking owl Rudy. After I watched your clip I was wondering if Davinci could remove your CA and it appears there is a solution for it. Give it a try next time you are snowed in and let us know if it works:

Yes, DaVinci Resolve can effectively remove purple and green fringing (chromatic aberration) using the built-in ResolveFX Chromatic Aberration Removal tool, especially with high-contrast edges, though manual adjustments in the Color Page or Fusion are needed for tough cases, with the dedicated tool (often in Studio) being the best bet. You apply it in the effects panel, zoom in to high-contrast areas (like tree tops against the sky) to see the effect, and adjust settings in the Inspector, often using advanced options or masks for precise control.

A small clip testing out the Super 35 mode (1.6 crop) with the C50. I used the RF 100-300mm with the 2x extender. ISO was from 800 to 3200. The AF was very snappy, found the eye very quickly. I did have it on a tripod.

Hey there Brett,
Thanks for the feedback re the CA (fringing). It was a 5-second fix using the Custom Curves tool (Hue vs Sat). Just click the color picker eye dropper onto the offending area and pull down the inserted color point on the graph until the fringing is gone. When you do this you need to widen the selection area on either side of the point to ensure a larger, smoother gradient to prevent banding.

Cheers,
Rudy

Another short clip of Junco's bathing in my stream. I was in Super 35 resolution. I used the RF 100-300 with the 2x extender. I am really licking the zoom lens for video work. Makes it a bit easier to find your subjects without a view finder by zooming out. I was using my tripod.

Very nice Rob. IQ is good.
Sound mix is nice.
Does your zoom control you showed in your video rig video fit and control the 100-300 like it does on the 24-105?

Hi Rob,
What a delightful little bird and a wonderful video, amazing image quality, great colour and perfect music! Thanks for sharing.

Question: What video profile did you use? Was it a log profile (C-log2 or 3), or was it a picture profile, which one?) Thanks.

Rudy

Thanks Dave, unfortunately no it does not. It only works on the 24-105 and the 70-200 Z versions. At least with the 70-200 works great with the 2x so you have up to 400mm with the Zoom control. It would be awesome on the 100-300, which is really my favorite video lens.

Thanks Rudy, I was not using any log on this. I am using the standard picture profile. The color strait out of this is really good (Rec 709). I had a couple scenes that looked a little more red than I would have liked but not sure if that had anything to do with the VND or just the way the camera did it. The waveform is a very useful tool.

Had some ducks visit our pond today so I managed some footage. I am loving the image that is coming out of this. I used the 100-300mm with the 2x. This is becoming my favorite wildlife video setup.

Rob,
I can see why you are loving the results! They look top notch. Perfect sound to go with it. Did you use auto-focus or manual when you had the 3 ducks and the middle one was in focus?

Lovely video, Rob. The image quality is really something. How do you control the position of the focus point, by touchscreen on the Ninja+? I like your title font choice and loved your closing scene with the ducks launching.
Cheers,
Rudy

Thanks Dave, I use auto focus for all of it. I use the touch focus on the screen of the camera.

Thanks for the feedback Rudy. I control the focus by using the touch to focus with the camera screen. Unfortunately my Shinobi II does not support touch focus like the R1 does. Hopefully it will with a firmware update. The Shinobi II does allow for camera control but only on the photo side. Using a the bigger screen is almost a must to see everything clearly and in sunlight depending on the nits of the monitor, mine is 1500 so it is very nice outside. Using the small screen in conjunction with the larger screen is working well. I touch focus on the small screen and confirm with the large one.

Hey Rudy your last post seemed to go away. I personally thought it added here. Nice to see some of your older work on Vimeo. Just a heads up. I will have one more building your rig but geared for my wildlife setup with the 100-300mm. Stay tuned.

Hi Rob, yes the post disappeared because I nuked it. This morning as I thought about it it seemed to be a little out of place, you know, living in the past sort of thing showing my old videos from 15 years ago. Anyways, I felt a bit awkward promoting my own stuff from so long ago.

I'm looking forward to your new "building your rig" video. I'm really glad you're doing all the video stuff you're doing here. It really ups the value and credibility and usefullness of this thread as video creation takes on a bigger and bigger role out there.
